Hospital situation is between 'difficult and very difficult', says expert

Head of Latvian Hospital Association Jevgēņijs Kalējs told Latvian Radio January 12 that hospitals are still overloaded.

The only solution to reduce the burden of hospitals is limiting the spread of Covid-19, which would also mean fewer patients admitted hospitals, he said.

At present, the situation in hospitals is "between difficult and very difficult". There are two reasons for this: an increase in the number of patients with Covid-19, particularly with severe symptoms, and medics getting infected, said Kalējs.

While the total number of beds available to Covid-19 patients in hospitals is increasing, it is essential to make the number of admitted patients lower than those discharged. But at the moment, the situation is the opposite.

Asked about possible solutions, Kalējs said that the only solution is to reduce the total number of Covid-19 patients in Latvia. “It doesn't depend on hospitals and medical workers. It is more dependent on the population of Latvia as a whole,” he added.
