Latvia among highest Covid incidence rates in EU, says epidemiologist

This week Latvia is likely to reach 3rd place in the European Union (EU) in Covid-19 incidence, the epidemiologist at the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC), Jurijs Perevoščikovs, told Latvian Television February 26.

In Latvia, the incidence of Covid-19 continues to increase while it is declining elsewhere in Europe.

Perevoščikovs said that an average of 700 cases of Covid-19 are detected in Latvia each day and 72 people are hospitalized.

“We check the reproduction factor of the infection every day. Unfortunately, in the last few days it is above 1 again, which means that the number of people who are infected will be infecting more people in the coming days,” the SPKC representative said.

“This stabilization is not good, we need to reduce rates,” Perevoščikovs said.

He compared the situation with the patient who is advised to take the medicine, but the patient does not use it properly, and then the next treatment already requires stronger medicines and more radical treatments.

Perevoščikovs warned that the new, more contagious British type of virus could rapidly spread in Latvia, and given its high prevalence, “we are in a very disadvantaged starting position”.

At the same time, the restrictions could be much lighter if they were respected, he said.
