Latvia ends 2020 with another daily COVID-19 record

The last day of 2020 saw Latvia post another daily record of new COVID-19 cases.

Following a record 1,367 new cases of COVID-19 on December 30, that figure was exceeded December 31 with 1,861 new infections confirmed, according to the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC). 

The total number of cases since the start of the pandemic passed the 40,000 mark as a result and now stands at 40,904.

Of 12,395 tests carried out, 15% were positive.

Nine deaths were also confirmed. Of those, two victims were aged 60-70 years, two were aged 70-80, four were aged 80-85 and one was aged 95-100.

In total 635 people have died in Latvia as a result of the coronavirus since the start of the pandemic.

According to the National Health Service (NVD) 999 patients are currently being treated for coronavirus symptoms in Latvia's hospitals, the first time the figure has dropped below the 1,000 mark for several days. Of that number 60 patients have serious symptoms while 939 have moderate symptoms.

Meanwhile in Lithuania 2,360 new cases of COVID-19 were recorded, and in Estonia the figure was 738 cases.
