Number of Covid-19 infected medics drastically down after vaccination

In December, more than 100 doctors were sick with Covid-19 at Riga East Clinical University Hospital (RAKUS), while now the number is 14, hospital representative Ardis Platkājis told Latvian Television February 9.

“The only argument [for the need for vaccination] is statistics. (..) In less than a month, Covid-19 spread is reduced,” Platkājis said.

On the other hand, other staff, who were more hesitant to vaccinate, continue to get ill as much as before.

“A significant difference is seen in the first month. Later we will see an even greater difference,” the medic added.

The first results of vaccination were already discussed in mid-January, when several thousand medics had received the vaccine against Covid-19. For example, more than 10 employees previously got ill per day at Stradiņš Hospital, but in mid-January this was just a couple of people.

Vaccination of medical personnel in Latvia began last year on December 28. As of February 8, National Health Service reported that 17,794 people had received the first dose of vaccine, and 14,195 people had received both doses.
