The number of cases of Covid-19 confirmed in Latvia has halved over the past month, while weekly decrease is 27%, the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) said May 31.

On average, 308 new infections were detected in one day last week (424 a week earlier). Last week, the number of tests performed decreased by 13%, averaging 10,977 tests per day.

An average of 46 patients per day were hospitalized over the past seven days, thus an average of 533 (previously 635) patients are treated in hospitals with Covid-19 daily. All age groups see a reduction, but people in the age group 30-59 are most likely to suffer, SPKC indicated.

Covid-19 infection reproduction factor (R) currently stands at 0.79 (a week earlier at 0.8), indicating a decrease in the spread of infectious disease.

Latvia ranks 4th-5th in Europe by highest incidence rate. In Europe the average cumulative incidence rate is 155 while in Latvia it is 266. Overall, the situation in Europe is improving: 23 countries have a stable or declining morbidity.
