Restrictions might be reduced in a month's time, say epidemiologists

If all the existing safety measures are observed and not reduced, within a month, Covid-19 infection rates might reduce to a level that would allow for the relaxing some restrictions, the Disease Prevention and Control Center (SPKC) said January 25.

The factor of re-productivity of Covid-19 infection calculated by the SPKC is currently 0.91 in Latvia, which means that 91 other people are infected by 100 people with the virus.

The epidemiological data in Latvia shows a slight stabilization of the situation, but the risks of spreading the infection remain high.

A total of 5,344 new infections with Covid-19 were detected last week (6,096 seven days ago) or an average of 763 new cases a day (an average of 871 cases a day seven days ago).

A total of 70 101 tests were conducted last week for Covid-19 infection, with an average positive test rate of 7.6% (8.5% seven days ago). The number of tests performed has decreased by 2.7%, with an average of 10 014 tests per day.

There is an increasing number of patients in hospitals who have a severe course of disease. According to data from the National Health Service (NVD), of the current total of 1,153 hospitalized Covid-19 patients, 101 people are in severe condition.

The SPKC also recalls that the Covid-19 test can be performed by February 7 without a doctor's referral. The possibility of a state-paid test is provided when there are signs of illness (e.g. signs of acute respiratory infection, increased body temperature, loss of taste, etc.).
