Photos: Farmers and forestry representatives protest in Rīga

Representatives of the forestry and agriculture sectors gathered outside the Cabinet on Tuesday, March 5.

The protest aims to draw attention to the long-ignored problems affecting Latvian forest owners and forest industry workers. According to the Society of Forest Owners, the industry is facing unfair treatment, as one of the most painful issues highlighting compensation for forest owners whose forest lands are handed over to nature conservation.

Protest organizers are demanding that the government provide for fair compensation, and not create new areas with restrictions on economic activity until fair compensation is in place.

Meanwhile, farmers in the protest want to draw the government's attention to the threat that behind the slogans of the European Union's (EU) green initiative lie the burdens of privately owned agricultural land, which is causing damage to Latvian farmers. This was explained previously by Juris Lazdiņš of the Farmers' Saeima.
