Back-to-school charity campaign launched in Latvia

On Monday, August 7, with the slogan “Let us help prepare for school together,” (Palīdzēsim sagatavoties skolai kopā) a campaign was launched to help prepare the children of socially disadvantaged groups during the course of school.

From August 7 to 27, citizens are invited to help children of disadvantaged and Ukrainian refugee families prepare for the school year by donating items needed for school. Physical items can be donated at shopping centers “Akropole Riga” and “Akropole Alfa” special donation boxes, but financial support can be provided on the “ziedot.lv” website.

“We also see that the number of families in need of support is still high enough – whether it would be a school bag or whether it is stationery goods, because to prepare for school, it is not just a pen and a notepad,” said Silvija Reinberga, parliamentary secretary of the Ministry of Education and Science.

The campaign is ongoing for the fourth year. Several thousand euros are donated each year and more than 100 families from all over Latvia have been helped.

Donated belongings come to the families of Rīga, but items purchased for donated funds - for families outside the capital.

“This year, we believe that demand could be higher after help, given that all bills have increased, inflation and, consequently, all goods are more expensive,” noted Rūta Dimanta, head of the charity Ziedot.lv.

"We're calling for new things to be donated, not used. If there is a choice, then we would ask primarily for new belongings. Of course, if your clothes or belongings are in good condition, we will also be delighted about them," said Aija Urbāne-Orbāne, head of marketing for the Akropole shopping centers.
