Riga Water noted that water supply bursts are not very special and this happens with large temperature fluctuations. But, for example, on Jūrmalas Gatve, pipes have burst twice in one week; moreover, repairs had been carried out there last summer for more than one and a half million euros.
“There, that section was already being repaired by Riga Water in the summer, and I looked, there was a cost of 1.6 million euros, and they rebuilt the entire water supply, and for the first time on Wednesday [..] pipes were broken and the water was coming out. And for the second time already on Sunday,“ said resident Aleksejs Dunda.
The burst water pipes were put in brand new in the summer. It will not cause losses to Riga Water because the repair has a three-year warranty and the new repairs have to be covered by the builder.
“We thought it was either a mistake by builders or some material defect. But because there were two crashes within four days [..] we're waiting for the builders' explanations. It needs to be understood whether it is the fault of the performance, whether it is the fault of the solution,” said Sandris Vanzovičs, senior communications coordinator of Riga Water Ltd.
Although Riga Water will not suffer losses due to these accidents, the same cannot be claimed by clients of the company. Residents of Jūrmalas Gatve experienced disrupted water supply and would experience disrupted traffic if new repairs were needed. There is also a barrier at the point of damage on one side of the road, which slows down transport movement.
