16 people have drowned by middle of summer

By July 15, the bodies of a total of 16 drowned people have been recovered from Latvian waters, with the total number of people found dead in water at 55 this year, said State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) representative Inta Palkavniece.

Last year, according to VUGD, a total 124 people drowned in Latvia's water bodies, down from 131 in 2017 and 135 in 2016. 

Latvia routinely records a high death toll due to drowning, with the number of drowning victims per 100,000 people at 6 times the EU average of 1.1.
