One dead in social care center fire in Rīga on Saturday

One person died in a fire at the Jugla branch of the State Social Care Center (VSAC) on Saturday, June 24, according to a Twitter entry of Welfare Minister Evika Siliņa (New Unity).

26 residents of the VSAC “Riga” Jugla branch in Rīga, Braila Street, have already been transported to the Ezerkrasti branch of Rīga, the Minister reports.

The fire in the public building on Braila Street broke out on the third floor, where one room of 20 square meters burned. A dead man was found in the burning room.

Firefighters rescued 32 people from the building.

On Saturday at 20:13 the fire was contained.

The Minister for Welfare also announced on Twitter that she had ordered the launch of a service inspection due to the incident, including whether there had been enough staff on the premises on Līgo holiday.
