“We will do everything to gather as many senior citizens in Riga as we can,” said Andris Siliņš of the Latvian Pensioners Federation after the meeting.
"We were convinced that some of the smaller issues will be solved, however, in regard to much larger problems, the bottom line was that the government simply lacks the necessary funds," Siliņš said.
As well as demanding generally higher levels of pension payments, the Federation has a range of other concerns including utility bills, property taxes and even items such as waste collection procedures.
A previous rally in September 2013 attracted thousands of participants but a further demonstration scheduled for March 2014 was cancelled after the government said it would take a fresh look at pensioners' concerns.
In the first quarter of 2014 the average pension in Latvia was worth 265 euros per month.
