Biotech professor elected to lead University of Latvia

The University of Latvia constitutional assembly delegates elected Deputy Rector of Sciences, microbiologist Indriķis Muižnieks to become the new Head Rector of the national academy of higher learning.

Muižnieks will take over from current Rector Mārcis Auziņš, who was no longer eligible after two four-year consecutive terms in the post, when he receives approval from the Cabinet of Ministers.

Prior to becoming Pro-Rector of Sciences in 2000, Muižnieks was Dean of the Faculty of Biology, department head, docent and research assistant. He has been associated with the University since 1976 and has a doctoral degree in biology as a member of the Academy of Sciences.

He has named as priorities cooperation between faculties and institutes within Latvia and internationally; movement toward innovation and new study qualifications; more fundraising and resource attraction to the sciences and research; more publications among students and academic personnel.

Muižnieks was nominated for the rector’s post by the Faculties of Biology, Humanities, Chemistry and the Institutes of Physical Chemistry and Cardiology Sciences.
