Border Watch: Air police scramble for Russian military patrol plane

Take note – story published 9 years ago

NATO's Baltic Air Police (BAP) pilots flew up over the Baltic Sea near Latvia's maritime border to spot an unannounced Ilyushin IL-38 patrol and anti-submarine craft being operated by Russia's armed forces, the National Armed Forces (NBS) reported on their Twitter feed Friday.

Friday's intercept brings the tally of incidents of encountering Russian military units near the national territory to 33 so far this year.

Defense officials have warned that Russian air force planes operating without having turned on their transponders or announced their flight plans could create serious hazards to civilian aviation.
