Fire and falling tree cause Midsummer deaths

Take note – story published 2 years ago

A falling tree claimed a life on Midsummer night, while four people perished in a fire, Agrita Vītola of the State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) told Latvian Radio June 24.

Midsummer eve was characterised by high temperatures during the day and violent thunderstorms during the night, both of which kept fire crews and the other emergency services busy.

"Probably, due to the strong wind, yesterday at 01.55 we received a call to Sala parish, where a large tree had fallen on a person who was confirmed as dead by doctors," Vītola said.

In Burtnieki municipality, four people died in a fire, at a one-storey house. One person managed to escape the building before the arrival of the VUGD.

The VUGD received 44 calls in the early hours of June 24, as a result of the storms and strong winds, mainly in Vidzeme and Zemgale regions.
