Four hundred fined last year for not speaking Latvian at work

Take note – story published 9 years ago

In 2014 the State Language Center wrote up citations for insufficient use of the Latvian language while on the job to altogether 423 people, however noted this is the smallest total registered in ten years.

A total of 231 retail companies were fined for failure to provide fully and accurately translated text in the state language on their merchandise labeling, enclosed instructions, and other goods-related documentation.

About 7% of all infractions that came to the attention of the State Language Center last year - 51 - are lack of state language posted on public signboards, marquees, posters, and printed announcements. This was significantly fewer compared to 2013's total, which was 93.
