Baiba Rubesa will become the chairman of the board of the Rail Baltica joint venture RB Rail, according to Transport Minister Anrijs Matīss (Unity), reported LETA news agency on Wednesday.

RB Rail is a joint venture between Latvia, Lithuania and Estonia.

The board of the joint venture chose Rubesa from more than ten candidates, though she is still yet to be officially instated. As of now talks about her contract are in progress.

On her LinkedIn profile Rubesa states she has worked at marketing departments of Volkswagen Group and Statoil, among others. She owns a consulting firm that has had contracts with the German government.

The joint venture RB Rail was created in November 2014 with the founders' capital of €1.95 mln. The company will oversee the design, construction and marketing parts of the project.

Rail Baltica is a proposed high-speed line to link Helsinki with Berlin through the Baltic capitals by 2024.

The key goal of the project is to renew regional integration by re-joining the Baltic states with the European rail network. The project will cost Latvia about 1.27 billion euro. It is co-funded by Connecting Europe Facility (CEF). The first part of the project acquired more than 80% in funding from the CEF.
