On Friday, May 13, in the afternoon, the police detained seven persons in Rātslaukums (Town hall square), including member of the European Parliament Tatjana Ždanoka (Latvian Russian Union).

One person was initially detained for displaying the banned St George's ribbon, four for attending an unauthorized picket. By 16:00 two other persons were detained – for petty hooliganism and use of symbols glorifying military aggression in a public place.

The police reported that around 200 people had arrived in the vicinity of Rātslaukums, some only observing what was happening. Deputies of the Riga City Council representing the Latvian Russian Union (LKS) were among attendees.

The unauthorized assembly is related to the fact that the Rīga City Council decided on the demolition of the Soviet monument in Pārdaugava. In order to oppose this decision, LKS wanted to hold a picket on Friday in Rātslaukums, but it was not allowed.
