Last year, 430 violations were recorded during a similar event, and the number may still grow as some violations might not have been processed yet. Krapsis said that the increase may be related to the fact that more unmarked police cars participated in the initiative as compared to last year.
Some violations were grave indeed, with one driver caught speeding at 155 km/h in a place where the speed limit is 90 km/h. Another driver tried bribing a police officer and is now facing criminal charges.
The "Speed Marathon" took place across Latvia and the EU from 6 a.m. Wednesday to 6 a.m. Thursday.
