Newly-freed Greste back online, going home

Take note – story published 9 years ago

Mike Greste handed the reins of his brother Peter’s Twitter account back to its rightful tweeter Tuesday, now that the Australian-Latvian journalist is free in Cyprus after spending thirteen months in a Cairo prison with his Al-Jazeera colleagues Mohamed Fahmy and Baher Mohamed, who remain there still.

For his first tweet from freedom on the beach in Nicosia, Peter wrote: “Feels sweet.”

However, as media have been reporting, Peter and his family are still very worried for the fate of his two colleagues. While Fahmy has renounced his dual-Egyptian citizenship in favor of his Canadian citizenship in the hope of a similar deportation proceeding perhaps being applied in his case, Mohamed has no such option, and faces a longer ten-year sentence, as well.

Greste tweeted that he and his brother Mike will soon be on their way home to a precious and long-overdue reunion.
