Online tool to prepare for acquisition of Latvian citizenship comes out

On Wednesday, July 14, the Office for Citizenship and Migration Affairs (PMLP) released a free electronic tool through which interested applicants can verify their knowledge and prepare for tests to acquire Latvian citizenship, the PMLP said.

PMLP invites people who want to acquire Latvian citizenship to check out an electronic tool that will help prepare for the naturalization test. It's available here (in Latvian only with personal details required).

PMLP said that each year the number of people who pass the necessary tests to acquire Latvian citizenship was reduced, and a survey conducted by PMLP in 2019 revealed that doubts about whether the tests would be passed were a major reason to deter non-citizens from naturalization. 23% of the 1,209 respondents worried about this.

PMLP Deputy Chief Uldis Apsītis said that the issue of accessibility to a digital tool has been ongoing for a long time, but this was particularly important during the pandemic.

Since the beginning of the naturalization process in Latvia, 148,478 naturalization applications for 161,911 persons have been received between February 1, 1995, and December 31, 2020.

According to data from the Register of Natural Persons, on 1 January 2020, the population in Latvia was 2,083 million, of which 1,768 million citizens are Latvian citizens (85%), 216,682 (10%) - Latvian non-citizens and 98,201 (5%) are foreign nationals.

The online asset is available for training purposes only. Actual tests for naturalization purposes must still be conducted in person.
