Friday, September 11, Latvian Radio reported that several people gathered by the Belarusian Embassy in Rīga, protesting against the detention of Belarusian opposition lawyer Ilya Saley.

According to Latvian Radio's observations, fifteen people took part in the protest, supervised by State Police. Picketers were holding posters saying "Free Ilya Saley!"

The organizer of the picket, Rihards Freidenfelds, said he knew Saley personally and that it was unacceptable to detain lawyers, thus limiting their independence.

Though the picket is devoted to Ilya Saley, another lawyer, Maxim Znak, has also been detained, according to the Belarusian human rights center Viasna website.
