Police say September 1 passed peacefully

This year September 1 passed more peacefully than in others, according to the State Police. A total of 107 misdemeanor (administrative proceedings) protocols were formed, most of them due to traffic violations.

Police official Artis Velšs said public order has improved on the day when pupils return to school--often marked by drinking bouts with minors eagerly partaking--due to special care and preparation taken by the police.

"We have special employees that are placed to patrol around schools, by schools, in retail stores and regarding road traffic," said Velšs, saying more than 350 police employees were involved. 15 minors were fined for drinking and seven for smoking.

On Friday the State Police reported that two inebriated young people were caught scaling the National Library Thursday evening.

They had used the ropes cleaners use to climb the roof. When police and services came, the two descended on their own. They face a fine of up to €500.

One of them said he climbed the roof to have a smoke, while the other wanted to take a selfie.
