Riga International Airport has recorded its busiest year ever, serving 5.16 million passengers and improving upon the record set in 2011 for the number of passengers served in a year, BNS newswire reported Tuesday.

The 5,160,000th passenger arrived in the airport on a flight from Copenhagen on Tuesday.

Transport Ministry's state secretary Kaspars Ozolins said at the event marking the arrival of the 5,160,000th passenger that 2015 had been a significant year for the airport.

The airport's CEO Andris Liepins told BNS earlier that this year the airport plans to serve by 7 percent more passengers compared to 2014, achieving a record-high number by the end of the year and exceeding the 5.1 million mark recorded in 2011.

Fully-owned by the Latvian state, Riga International Airport is the largest air traffic hub in the Baltic countries, serving flights to 69 destinations in the winter and 89 in the summer season.
