The Security Police has detained a Latvian who fought in Eastern Ukraine, reported LSM's Latvian-language service Thursday via LETA.

Līga Pētersone, a spokeswoman for the Security Police, told the LETA newswire that on January 25 the Security Police started criminal proceedings against an inhabitant of Latvia for possibly participating in the Ukraine conflict.

The person was arrested after returning to Latvia.

The Security Police denied further comment on the ongoing investigation.

This is the first time in Latvia that a person has been named a suspect over illegally participating in an armed conflict abroad.
