Security service gives red light to Latvian Russian Union's rally

The State Security Service (VDD) recommends that the Riga City Council (RD) ban the walk announced by the Latvian Russian Union on May 28 from Uzvaras park to the Freedom Monument, according to VDD's statement on May 23.

Analysis carried out by VDD shows that the proposed move would continue to increase the threat to democratic state, the fundamental principles of democracy, the interests of national security, and contribute to divisions in society.

The rally, in view of its objectives, is incompatible with the growing public tension in relation to Russian aggression, war crimes, and crimes against humanity in Ukraine.

The proposed move would contribute to the committing of the criminal offense provided for in Article 74.1 of the Criminal Law, i.e. genocide, crimes against humanity, peace, and public glorification and acquittal of war crimes, as well as endangering public security and well-being, said the service.

Riga Mayor Mārtiņš Staķis said on Twitter that Rīga municipality will act in accordance with the analysis of the security services.
