Speed blitz nets 277 tickets in a day

Speed checks on Latvian roads produced a bumper crop of violations on October 4 with patrolmen writing out 277 tickets, State Police told the LETA news agency Monday.

As ever, most of the dangerous drivers were caught in Riga region - 159 in total.

A further 20 drivers failed alcohol breath tests, 13 of them in Riga region.

During the same 24-hour period, 45 road traffic accidents were registered, with eight people injured and one killed.

Latvia's roads are consistently rated among the most dangerous in the European Union.
