No major damage caused by storms in Latvia

The thunderstorms tearing through Vidzeme, Sēlija, and Latgale regions of Latvia over the past two days have left behind mostly fallen trees but not significant damage, Latvian Television reports.

The lightning and strong wind were raging locally, for example in Rēzekne, causing the largest destruction in the northern part of the city, while it was was minimal elsewhere.

One of the “Rēzekne miller” buildings has been stripped of some of the roof. The company said it would turn to insurers.

Not only wind but also hail losses have been caused in the Jēkabpilsmunicipality, in the parishes close to the Lithuanian border.

"The roofs of multi-apartment houses, the roofs of private houses have suffered. Those that are slate coverage. Cars are damaged. One big tree in the city fell and hit on the corner of the house.[..] There had been a confirmation to saw this tree, but there was a delay with the Nature Conservation Agency," said Sanita Lūse, head of the Jekabpils Municipality Viesīte Administration.

The most extensive power supply disruption has been identified in the municipalities of Gulbene, Rēzekne, Madona, and Aizkraukle, as reported by the “Distribution Network” (Sadales tīkls).
