December 2023 was dark. Very dark.

If you felt less than energized throughout December last year, rest assured that it was probably not as the result of your inherently Scrooge-like personality. More likely you were simply deprived of the life-affirming rays of the large star exploding at the center of the solar system.

An astonishing fact published by the Central Statistical Bureau (CSB) March 6 sheds more light on the subject, revealing that the Latvian capital, Rīga, enjoyed a meager 6 hours of sunshine in December 2023. For the sake of clarity, that is not 6 hours per day, but 6 hours for the entire month.

Even compared to previous Decembers, which usually manage to scrape together more than 20 hours of Vitamin D delivery, it was a remarkably short time to spend in the spotlight, and probably explains why we still feel a bit depressed, even now.
