'Fogbow' observed in eastern Latvia

A white rainbow, or fogbow, has been observed in Līvāni municipality near Rudzāti, an eyewitness told the portal LSM.

Photo taken by Gunārs Vilcāns shows a white bow above the communications tower on the Varakļāni Road on the morning of Thursday, September 7. In Latvia, natural phenomenon is the relatively rare.

A fogbow occurs when the fog is dense enough but at least a few meters high. The sky must be clear so that the sun can shine on a layer of fog and the sun's rays break through the fog.

The sun should be high enough above the horizon, and it is for this reason that fogbows are rare in Latvia. Low but dense fog is typical early in the morning or late in the evenings when the sun is too low. In addition, summer fog is often only one or two meters high. Also, in Latvia fog is more frequent when the sky is overcast.

Fogbows are far more likely to be seen in mountainous regions.
