As of Monday morning, as an active cyclone from the southeast approaches, the weather will become even dangerous in places - heavy snowing is expected in the western and central districts of the country and a 5 to 8 centimeter thick blanket of snow will form in places.
A yellow alert is in force from 5:00 to 17:00 on Monday.
Some frost and very heavy snowing are expected as air temperatures drop on Monday night. In the evening, the yellow alert (potential danger) will be replaced by an orange one (danger).
Riga municipality introduced so-called “snow tickets” on Monday, April 22. Drivers will be able to use the city's public transport for free on this day, the local government said. A passenger vehicle registration certificate, or car technical passport, is considered a valid document for public transport on Monday.
The maximum air temperatures on Monday will be +1 C to +5 C, warmer in the east.
Meteorologists warn that snow may intensify in the evening as the air temperature drops and snow layers form.
In the second half of the day, light frosts and very heavy snow are expected over much of the country, except the easternmost part. Snow cover may reach 10 centimeters in some parts of the western and central parts of the country. Icy roads and visibility may be reduced to 200-500 meters during snow, with some light blizzards expected.
Latvian State Roads urges drivers to plan extra time for their journey, carefully assess the road surface condition and choose the appropriate driving speed and keep a safe distance.
Drivers who have already changed from winter to summer tires should be especially careful.
