Latvia's January heat record was set on the first day of the year, Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center (LVĢMC) reported.

The warmest weather was recorded in Daugavpils at +11.7 C.

Previously, the highest air temperature in January was recorded on January 10, 2007, at +10.7 C in Mērsrags and Jelgava.

The rest of the country has also achieved new records of local importance, with air temperatures rising to +6 C to +10 C.

The heat has covered a large part of Europe. In Lithuania and Poland, air temperatures have reached +14 and +18 C, respectively.

Due to warm weather, water levels have risen rapidly in many Latvian rivers. Flooding is also expected, warns the LVĢMC.
