Latvia saw hottest August in 80 years

Last month's average air temperature in Latvia was +19.8 C or 2.9 C above norm, according to information by the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Center.

August was 2 to 3 degrees warmer than June and July. It became the second hottest August in the history of state observations, lagging behind only 1939 - that year, the month's average air temperature reached +20.2 C.

The monthly minimum air temperature was +6.6 C on August 31 in Stende, while the maximum air temperature was +33.7 C on August 19 in Pāvilosta which is also the highest temperature recorded this year in Latvia.

125 heat records were set in August which is the highest number of temperature records outperformed in one month in recent years. The country's heat record was also set on four days.

The average rainfall in Latvia in August was in line with the normal rate of 76.4 millimeters.

The average air temperature this summer was +18.1 C, which is half a degree above normal, but 0.7 degrees below last year's record-high summer figure. The total amount of rainfall was in line with the norm.
