Three dead on the ice this winter in Latvia

Take note – story published 1 year ago

The State Fire and Rescue Service (VUGD) has already removed three dead people from water bodies this year. In two cases, the equipment found next to him suggests that they had been ice fishing, VUGD spokeswoman Viktorija Gribuste told Latvian Radio on December 27..

Ice has formed very slowly and unsafe this month, so it is very dangerous to step on it,

Gribuste said: “There is no ice on water bodies right now. There's something like ice, of course, but it's extremely unsafe, dangerous and brittle.”

“This year, there was also a very strong snowfall at the same time as the cold, and the snow works as an insulator. The snow heats the ice. The conditions of thaw contribute to the fact that ice is not only being formed but also being melted from the top, so it is very dangerous to be on the ice,” the VUGD spokeswoman said.
