Weather week: yet more rain on the way to Latvia

Take note – story published 3 years ago

This week the weather in Latvia will remain wet and windy, according to the latest forecasts from the Latvian Environment, Geology and Meteorology Centre.

Monday will be similar to recent days with short-term rainfall expected in many places and occasional thunderstorms.

The strongest rain is expected in the afternoon in Zemgale, around Riga and Vidzeme, but in Latgale the day may pass without any significant rainfall at all.

A moderate west-to-southwesterly wind will blow.

Maximum air temperatures during the day will be from +15 Celsius to + 19 C.

In Riga, in the afternoon there may be a short period of heavy rain and the temperature will be around +17 C or  + 18 C.

On Tuesday a wider precipitation zone will cross Latvia, therefore rain is expected everywhere, and it will be heavy in many places. The air temperature on Tuesday will not exceed + 17 C. A moderately strong westerly wind will blow, which in gusts in Kurzeme and Vidzeme will reach 15-19 meters per second, but in some places on the coast even 20-22 m/s.

Rain will remain to the fore in the middle of the working week. On Wednesday, precipitation and wind will decrease slightly but on Thursday morning, a new precipitation zone will approach Latvia, which will bring yet more moderate to strong rain throughout the country. The wind will remain strong, reaching gusts of 17-20 m/s.

The end of the week should bring some improvement in conditions when the effects of a high-pressure zone intensify, causing precipitation to decrease and the wind to subside. On Friday, rain is expected only in some places, and on Saturday most of Latvia will enjoy no precipitation. The air temperature on Friday and Saturday could reach + 20 C. However, the respite will be brief with current forecasts suggesting that the next cyclonic  weather system to arrive will bring yet more precipitation and increased winds.
