Street art fest in Rīga on Sunday

On May 28, at a former rubber-products factory 'Provodnik' in the Sarkandaugava district of Rīga, a festival of street art 'ROW' ('Riga open wall') will take place with 18 artists participating and everyone welcome, Latvian Radio reported on Friday.

For the artists, the ROW fest will be an opportunity to express themselves, for others – to get to know street art and the creative area of Provodnik.

The idea of a legal space for street art was implemented last November, but now follows a sequel, the ROW event, to promote this wall and encourage people to go there, as well as to change the way of thinking, namely that street art is not vandalism, said the 'Provodnik' creative director Laura Upeniece.

The open wall is 116 meters long. "The principle is that anyone can come and draw over [the previous paintings]. You cannot sign your drawing – this is mine, nobody can paint over it. You draw, photograph, and thanks for the attention," said Upeniece.

"This is a place where people come to express themselves, knowing that their work can stay up for an hour, a month, a year. [..] We have separate stages where it has been painted over five times already. So the cultural layer is good," added artist Dainis Rudens.

For the ROW event, the wall has been painted so the artists have a blank page. On May 28 from 9:30 to 16:30, eighteen artists will implement a large-format composition on the topic "Free".

On the day of the event, from 12:00 to 13:00, visitors will also be able to take a tour of the creative territory of Provodnik.
