At the start of 2020 exhibitions from the collection of the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Center are on display almost simultaneously in four different cities in Latvia (Daugavpils, Rēzekne, Rīga) and in Panevėžys, Lithuania, the Center said in a news release January 3.

Since 20 November, the exhibition “M. / M. Valda Mežbārde / Guna Millersone” from the Rothko Center’s art collection has been available at the town hall of Panevėžys, Lithuania.

"The exhibition is a meeting of two Latvian artists in Lithuania. Valda Mežbārde and Guna Millersone represent one generation of painters who share certain parallels and points of intersection in terms of creative growth and activity but whose verticals of style have developed in markedly different ways. Both artists are inspired by landscape. But they each recreate it in their own way through a certain relationship among elements such as colour, light and dark, line and plane. In this respect, they are worlds apart. The exhibition is available until 10 January 2020," the release says.

Since 2 December, the exhibition “In Silence” by Latvian artist Linda Zīverte has been on display at Daugavpils District Municipality Cultural Center “Vārpa”. The exhibition is available until 31 January 2020.

Since 19 December, selected works by Silva Linarte are on display at Latgale Museum of Cultural History, Rēzekne, in the exhibition “Another... Different morning”.

"The exhibition consists of more than sixty works by Silva Linarte that have been borrowed from the Rothko Center and a number of private collections. Natural landscapes, memory fragments or artistic messages created in the author’s laconic, seemingly delicate stylistic manner reveal her nuanced worldview, subtle sensitivity and professional mastery," the release says. The exhibition is available until 26 January 2020.

The new creative year of 2020 will begin at 3 p.m. on 3 January at Rīga Central Library with the opening of an exhibition of the 15th International Painting Symposium “Mark Rothko 2019”. Each year, come September, Daugavpils becomes a creative forum for Latvian and foreign artists, who gather to spend two weeks in residency at Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Center and create unique artwork, inspired by Mark Rothko’s childhood city, Daugavpils fortress and the atmosphere and culture of Latgale region. The 15th International Painting Symposium “Mark Rothko 2019” brought together ten artists from Germany, China, the United States, Latvia, the United Kingdom, India and Belarus. The exhibition is available until 31 January 2020.
