Rīga shopping mall enhances its artistic credentials

Shoppers will be able to get a bit of culture as they peruse the wares at a Rīga shopping mall with the opening of a new art exhibition.

From February 16 to March 26, the exhibition hall on the 3rd floor of the shopping centre AKROPOLE Alfa will host the solo exhibition “A Moment” by artist Laura Vizbule, which is making its debut in Rīga. The exhibition features more than 10 oil paintings created by the artist since 2019. The artworks can be seen every day from 10:00 to 21:00.

"The title of the exhibition “A Moment” came unintentionally from what artist heard in an interview about the meaning of a moment – a time that affects the universe, the world and ourselves, everything known and unknown. According to the artist, an unexpected event is also a moment that can change one’s whole life," says advance material in a welcome break with the 'Buy one get one free!' blurb one usually encounters in shopping malls.

Since 2013, Laura Vizbule’s works have been exhibited in venues in Jelgava, Liepāja, Alsunga and Tērvete. This will be the first time the exhibition will be held in Rīga.

The artist graduated from the Latvian Academy of Arts in 2010 with a bachelor's degree in the Visual Arts Department, Glass Art sub-field. In 2018, she obtained a master's degree in visual plastic art, glass art, at the Latvian Academy of Arts.

“My work is my mirror. When I paint, I am alone with myself. When painting, I embrace the unknown, because I never know what the result will be. That is why in art, one of the most difficult, but at the same time the most wonderful processes is creation. It is the only way to get to know yourself, your identity and awaken your soul. Art has taught me freedom – it has formed a paradigm for my sense of life. I see ‘moments’ in everyday routine – even a glorious sunrise on a cold winter morning. I am happy to show my ‘moments’ to the residents and visitors of Rīga. I am delighted that my artworks will be exhibited in Riga for the first time,” said Vizbule.

The exhibition is free of charge and available every day from 10:00 to 21:00 on the 3rd floor of AKROPOLE Alfa.
