Rothko center launches collection catalog

Take note – story published 1 year ago

On Friday 18 March, the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Center will launch the catalog of its exhibition “Found in the Collection”.

"'Found in the Collection' is the most ambitious exhibition from the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Center collection to date. It displays art and cultural values collected in the nine years since the centre was created and confirms its active presence on the contemporary art scene. In a sense, the exhibition is a visual diary featuring stories of symposia and exhibitions, offering evidence of vibrant communication and cooperation towards exciting art projects and recording meaningful dialogues and monologues about current developments in the art world where the human touch takes centre stage – that of the artist, the curator and the collector," says publicity material.

The exhibition catalog features Latvian and international artists from the Rothko Center’s vast and excellent collection totalling almost three thousand artworks in different mediums.

"'Found in the Collection' is the first publication about the jewels in the Rothko Center collection. It highlights each artist’s special bond with the institution and the importance of each contribution to its emergence, existence and continued development," the center says.

At 4 p.m. on Friday 18 March, the Rothko Center is organising an official opening event for this seminal publication and invites featured artists and local and visiting art lovers to join the celebration.

The exhibition and its catalog are also another step for the city of Daugavpils in its aspiration to become a European Capital of Culture in 2027.
