Latvian Song and Dance Festival preview: July 3

From June 30 to July 10, the XXVII Nationwide Latvian Song and XVII Dance Festival will fill the capital Rīga with celebrations, music and dance.

As the week progresses, we will guide you through each day's festivities. Tickets are still available to many of them and some events are free, so everyone has the opportunity to experience part of the magic. Tickets are available for purchase on bilesuparadize.lv's Song and Dance Festival section.

The events listed here are not exhaustive – we have picked out a selection of highlights.

July 3

10:00-22:00 Festive Quarter (Esplanāde)

Running from July 3 right through to July 9, the Esplanade park will be transformed into, essentially, a Song and Dance Festival village with concerts and shows on two stages, a modern design market, a holiday restaurant, a public viewing area for large concerts, media studios, and more.

12:00-19:00 Open-air amateur theater (Vērmanes park and Esplanāde)

The amateur theater movement in Latvia has long and rich traditions, and they will certainly have a chance to shine today with amateur theater actors performing works by Latvian authors all afternoon and into the evening – and all free of charge.

16:00-18:00 Dance concert 'Balts' (Arena Rīga)

A concert performance of a creative dance, created with new music and new choreography, in which stage dance and the art of Latvian artists come together. There will be a second performance running 20:00-22:00.

18:00-03:00 Concert of overseas Latvian song and dance collectives (Ķipsala exhibition hall)

The main theme of this event is the concept of a "meeting house" where Latvians from from different parts of the world with very different experiences, come together. It's for the diaspora collectives themselves, and public tickets are not available.

21:00-23:00 'Conductors' choral concert dedicated to the 150th anniversary of the Song Festival Tradition (Mežaparks Kokaru Hall)

The Song Festival would be unthinkable without choir conductors! Therefore, celebrating 150 years of the Song Festival, a concert will be held with conductors from all over Latvia participating, playing repertoire chosen by the concert participants themselves.

The concert is planned to showcase the repertoire of single choirs as well as double choirs and mixed choirs.
