Lāčplēsis Day and Independence celebration guide in Rīga

Over the next two weeks, Latvians celebrate their independence and commemorate those fallen in the name of it. Starting November 6, there will be plenty of commemorative and festive events throughout the country. Here we have outlined some in the capital city Rīga.

Lāčplēsis Day events

November 6: At 14:00 in the square near the Latvian War Museum (Smilšu Street 20), the War of Independence commemorative bonfire will be lit, which will continue to burn until November 11. From 9:00 to 7:00, an exhibition of military equipment of the Latvian and allied armed forces will be on display. 

November 7 to 19: The Rīga Art Nouveau Center (Alberta Street 12) hosts a "Patriot Week" with lectures, presentations, and festive card workshops. Prior reservations should be sent to [email protected]. The center will be open 14:00 to 15:00 on November 11, 14, 15, 16, and 17, and 10:00 to 18:00 on the other days.

November 11 to 19: Rīga culture and folk art center "The Small Guild" will make a documentary available on its social networks Facebook and YouTube. Directed by Ivars Seleckis, the 1973 film "Apcirkņi" ("Bins"; typically meaning grain storage) talks about Latvian rural environment in times of fatal change.

November 11 and 18: The Rīga Porcelain Museum (Kalēju Street 9/11) hosts thematic porcelain-painting workshops at 12:00, 16:00 and 18:00. Prior registration is required by calling 26406354 (Tuesday-Saturday).

November 11, 9:00: An ecumenical service at the Rīga Cathedral (Herdera Square 6).

November 11, 9:00–22:00: A military equipment exhibition near the Latvian War Museum (Smilšu Street 20).

November 11, 11:00–18:00: An exhibition on the Lāčplēsis War Order, the history of the Constitution, and guided tours, at the Latvian National History Museum (Brīvības Boulevard 32).

November 11, 12:00: A commemoration moment at Sudrabkalniņš memorial (Slokas Street, Kurzemes Drive intersection.

November 11, 16:00-19:00: The lighting of candles at the Brāļu Cemetery, followed by a torch walk to the Freedom Monument, lighting of candles there, a torch walk to 11. novembra embankment, and setting a 'raft of fire' into the Daugava.

November 11, 16:00: A folk dance concert at the VEF Culture Castle (Ropažu Street 2).

November 11, 16:00–19:00: A concert of young music bands "Tu esi mana Latvija!" (You are my Latvia!) in the square near the Latvian War Museum (Smilšu Street 20).

November 11, 17:00: A folk music concert at the cultural center "Iļģuciems".

November 11, 17:00–21:30: concerts, bonfires, soup and speeches at Uzvaras Park in Pārdaugava, with the participation of Raxtu Raxti, Skyforger, and others.

November 11, 18:00: A choir-and-orchestra concert at the Rīga Cathedral (Herdera Square 6).

November 11, 18:00: National Guard Orchestra with soloists Lāčplēsis Day concert "Sounds of Freedom" at "Lielā gilde" concert hall, Rīga.

November 11, 19:00: Folklore band concert with bonfires and conversations at the culture center "Ziemeļblāzma" (Ziemeļblāzmas Street 36).

Independence Proclamation Day events

November 17–19, 18:30–23:00: Light and fire installations at the Arkādijas Park.

November 17, 18:00: Concert "Es nāku no mazas tautas" (I come from a small nation) at the culture center "Imanta" (Anniņmuižas boulevard 29).

November 17, 19:00–20:30: Choir concert "Ir tikai viena Latvija" (There is only one Latvia) at the concert hall Ave Sol (Citadeles Street 7).

November 18, 9:00: An ecumenical service at the Rīga Cathedral (Herdera Square 6).

November 18, 10:30: Flower laying at the Freedom Monument.

November 18, 11:00–18:00: An exhibition on the Lāčplēsis War Order, other exhibitions, and guided tours, at the Latvian National History Museum (Brīvības Boulevard 32).

November 18, 13:00: A military parade on the 11. novembra krastmala along the Daugava.

November 18, 16:00–17:00: A choir concert at the music school on Prūšu Street 13B.

November 18, 16:00: A concert by the drum and bagpipe band "Auļi" at the culture center "Ziemeļblāzma" (Ziemeļblāzmas Street 36).

November 18, 17:00: A concert with the folklore and ancient battle group "Vilkači" at the Latvian War Museum (Smilšu Street 20).

November 18, 17:00:kokle concert at the culture center "Iļģuciems" (Lidoņu Street 27 k-2).

November 18, 19:00: A concert "Latvian Impressions" at the VEF Culture Castle (Ropažu Street 2).

November 18, 19:00–23:00: At the square by the Freedom Monument, the traditional festivities with a concert, the President's speech, and a multimedial light show will take place.

November 18, 18:00–23:00: Fire and light installations along the city canal from the National Opera to Bastejkalns.

November 18, 21:00: A choir concert at the Small Guild (Amatu Street 5).
