Project brings filmmaking education to young Latvians

A cycle of online video classes is being made available throughout Latvia, in which the Riga International Film Festival (RIGA IFF), in cooperation with the Norwegian Film Clubs Association (NFK), is offering the chance to learn about film-related professions and filmmaking together with Latvian film professionals.

Lessons dedicated to the study of the moving image are complemented by a selection of Norwegian children's and youth films, as well as working materials created together with the Riga Cinema Museum, which will give youngsters a grounding in cinematic knowledge and practical tasks.

In a cycle of ten video lessons, representatives of various film professions – directors, screenwriters, costume designers and others – will talk about the role of their profession in the making of a film and how what they have done affects what the viewer sees as a result of watching the film. Master of animation Edmunds Jansons, artist Kristīne Jurjāne, director Alise Zariņa, cameraman Gints Bērziņš and other Latvian cinema professionals will present their jobs in the classes. Video classes are led by director and actor Klāvs Mellis.

RIGA IFF Cinema Club is an educational project in the format of video lessons, which offers every student and teacher a guide to learning the language of cinema and getting to know cinema professions. The creators of the project, both in Latvia and Norway, hope that the RIGA IFF Cinema Club will promote the discussion about cinema among young people, as well as encourage them to consider connecting the future with cinema-making.

The cycle of ten free access lessons is complemented by a selection of Norwegian children's and youth films that highlight the topics discussed in the video lessons. Among them is also the film "Los Bando" shown at the Riga International Film Festival, which once received a children's jury award.

RIGA IFF Cinema Club classes are available on the Cinema Club platform – kinoklubs.rigaiff.lv , and can also be found on the Riga International Film Festival website (rigaiff.lv/kino-klubs), where worksheets and a selection of films are also available for download.
