41,000 potential participants in 2023 Song and Dance festival

Electronic registration of XXVII Latvian Song and XVII Dance Celebration Participants has been completed. Within two weeks, 40,892 potential participants have registered, representatives of the Latvian National Culture Center (LNKC) said March 22. 

“Song and Dance Celebration is not only an honorable tradition, but also an event that reflects today's need for security, convenience, and thought-out functionality. We are pleased that the registration system created will be extended to the next festival,” said Daina Markova, executive director of the festival.

According to festival's organizers, the youngest five participants are currently one year old, while 21 participants are over 90 years old. 

40 892 potential participants have registered for the festival, of which 15,809 are in choirs and 16,848 are dancers. 400 are both in a choir and in a dance group.

The festival will be attended by 1,790 collectives – 268 from Kurzeme, 250 from Latgale, 53 from Sēlija, 599 from Vidzeme, 152 from Zemgale, 377 from Rīga, and 91 from the diaspora. The composition of the collectives is as follows: 695 dance groups, 457 choirs, 155 folklore bands, 124 folk applied arts studios, 69 kokle ensembles, 67 vocal ensembles, 66 brass orchestras, 55 folk music chapels, 79 minority groups and 23 amateur theaters.

XXVII Latvian Song and XVII Dance Celebrations will take place in Rīga from June 30 to July 9, 2023, with a main focus of the 150th anniversary of the Song Festival tradition. The festival is organized by the Latvian National Culture Center, which is the State institution subordinate to the Ministry of Culture.
