Three for the Weekend: World Films, Rock and Organ, Desire

Long-lost spring is supposed to make an entrance again this weekend. Here are a few events to celebrate!

Riga Pasaules Film Festival 2024

From April 25 to 28, the 11th Pasaules ('World') Film Festival takes place at the small cinema Kino Bize.

The overarching theme of the festival is "Life".

"Cinematic stories that deal with being alive, a notion that focuses on experience, sensitivity and curiosity, rather than on categories embedded in cultural values and represented through language. Instead of reflecting on the question who are we?, we want to ask questions like what matters to us? and what drives our existence?", says the description of the festival.

The screening program can be accessed on Kino Bize's website.

Rock, Organ, and Candlelight

On April 26 and 27, the Rīga St. Paul's Church (Deglava Street 1), in a unique candlelit atmosphere, world-famous rock and metal hits by Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, Metallica, Queen, as well as local Latvian rock legends like Pērkons and Līvi, will be performed on the organ, guitar, bass, and percussion.

The start of the event on both April 26 and 27 is at 21:00.

In the Name of Desire

On April 27, the Latvian National Museum of Art opens an exhibition "In the Name of Desire", uncovering the diversity of themes of sexuality and sensuality in the history and present of Baltic visual art.

"The exhibition sheds light on authors in Latvian 20th century art history who have bravely taken up the investigation of sexuality and the phenomenon of desire," says the museum, adding that a feminist approach and queer art is also promised.

The Latvian National Museum of Art is open Tuesday to Sunday. Opening hours here.
