Online registration for participants in this year's landmark Latvian Song and Dance Festival closed February 13 with more than 40,000 having filled out the necessary forms, the official in charge o the event told Latvian Radio February 14.

By the end of Wednesday 42 822 participants applied, though some had experienced glitches or delays with their applications, Eva Juhņjēviča, Executive Director of the Song and Dance Celebration, told Latvian Radio.

She said that any participants who had not registered already were classed as late, and if they wanted to participate in the festival, they would now have to write an application to be considered by the organizers of the festival on an individual basis.

As previously reported by LSM, for the first time ever all participants of the Song and Dance Celebration from February 1 to February 13 were  required to register with the electronic system or risk losing out on participation.

The electronic system replaces the previous paper forms, which took a long time to process and frequently contained mistakes that were difficult to put right.

The more than 40 thousand participants come from 21 countries this year.

Registration is required because during the festivities the participants will be issued with special identification cards, which will allow them to use the public transport in Riga city free of charge, as well as to receive free lunch and dinner at the venues. Participants will also be entitled to leave from work as bearers of the cards.

The 26th Latvian Song and the 16th Dance Festival will take place in Riga this summer from June 30 until July 8.
