Artist Ilmārs Blumbergs passes away

Artist Ilmārs Blumbergs has passed away after a long disease, reported LSM's Latvian-language service via LETA Thursday.

Blumbergs was born September 6, 1943 in Rīga. He graduated from the Painting Department of the Latvian Academy of Art in 1972.

From 1969 to 1978 he worked as a scenographer at the Dailes Theater. He has worked in a number of other theaters both in Latvia and abroad.

He is a regular participant in exhibitions since 1962. In 1995 he was awarded the honorary Order of the Three Stars. In 2009 he was awarded a Lifetime Contribution award at the annual theater awards ceremony Spēlmaņu nakts (Night of the actors).

"I draw what I live to better understand how I live," Ilmārs Blumbergs told Latvian Radio in 2013, talking about his exhibition titled "I won't die".
