Great bittern now on candid webcam!

Take note – story published 6 years ago

Latvia's famous bird webcams got another addition with the nest of a great bittern with its young now being streamed online. The nest is located in the northern part of the Engure lake.

The nest was found by ornithologist Jānis Bētiņš in early May, when it had five eggs inside.

This is the sixth bird webcam set up by the Latvian Fund for Nature. The great bittern, a wading bird, is a protected species in Latvia.

"It's a challenge to ornithologists to find a nest of a great bittern, as they are great masters of camouflage. They have the same color as the reeds, they move silently and nest in different places each year. At last we've succeeded and made a camera," said Latvian Fund for Nature representative Liene Brizga-Kalniņa.

There are five young inside the nest, and their family life will be available for everyone to see for another month, when they'll be leaving the nest to migrate south.

LTV's Nature Facts reported earlier that Latvia's popular online bird cams were visited by 3 million people last year.
