Liepāja theater shines in drama awards

Latvia's national drama and theater awards took place on the evening of November 23 with thespians from across the country gathering to receive their honors. The ceremony took place on the birthday of the legendary theater director Eduards Smiļģis.

Liepāja's theater walked away with several of the main awards, winning both the Grand Prix and the major production prizes for "Precības" (Gogol's "Marriage") directed by Sergejs Zemļanskis. Zemļanskis was also named director of the year.

Daugavpils theater's staging of "Jubileja ‘98" won in the smaller production category. 

Actress of the year was  Indra Briķe for "Pielūdzēja nr.1" at the Dailes theater while actor of the year was Rihards Jakovels for "Pazudušais dēls" at Valmiera drama theater.

The lifetime achievement awards went to National Theater director Mihails Kublinskis and Ņina Ņeznamova of the Mikhail Chekhov Russian Theater.
