Most popular 2016 Latvian books named

The most read Latvian prose books this year are Nora Ikstena's Mātes piens, Māris Bērziņš' Svina garša (both published by Dienas grāmata) and Māra Zālīte's Pieci pirksti by the Mansards publishing house.

These books were the most borrowed from libraries in Latvia, the Group for Countryside Libraries told LETA Monday.

While the most popular books in the poetry section are Kārlis Vērdiņš' Pieaugušie, Kornēlija Apšukrūma's Dzirdēt ar sirdi, and Guntars Račs' Laikam laika nav.

Lucinda Riley's novels Lavender Garden and Girl on the Cliff were among the most popular translated prose, together with Christina Dodd's One Kiss From You.

The most popular nonfiction books were Valdis Zatlers' - he's the former president - Kas es esmu and two books penned by Līga Blaua - Harijs Spanovskis about a pop singer, and Zemgalietis. Uldis Dumpis about the actor Uldis Dumpis.

Rislaki Yukka's Vorkuta! Gulag Uprising and Viktor Suvorov's Icebreaker, and Kuz'kina Mat were among the most popular books of translated nonfiction this year.

Juris Zvirgzdiņš' Miega pasaka and Arno Jundze's Kristofs un ēnu ordenis were among the most popular children's books, as was Inese Zandere's Lupatiņu rīts.

Three books from Jeff Kinney's Diary of a Wimpy Kid series were the most popular books in translated children's literature.

The data was provided for books from 613 libraries across Latvia and included only books published within the last three years.

On December 2 one of the authors, publishers and translators in each category will be awarded by the group.
