Munch coming to Daugavpils

Take note – story published 7 years ago

Visitors to the Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Center will be able to add another pioneering artist to their itineraries with a work by Norwegian master Edvard Munch going on display.

The arrival of the Munch piece will be heralded on Friday, April 21 at an international seminar and discussion forum called 'Munch meets Rothko in Daugavpils'.

In April Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Center celebrates its 4th birthday.

"This year the Rothko Center has prepared a special gift for visitors – for the first time in history an original work by world-famous Norwegian artist Edvard Munch will be exhibited in Latvia," says a release from the Center.

Six new Art Projects, exibiting regional, Latvian and foreign artworks will be opened in the rest of the Rothko Center's exhibition halls.

The Munch work in question will be “Portrait of advocate Ludvig Meyer” (1909) from the collection of Trondheim Art Museum and will be on display from April 21 until September 19 this year.

Support for the initiative has been provided by the Royal Norwegian Embassy in Latvia and Daugavpils City Council.

This project is the continuation of cooperation between Trondheim Art Museum and Daugavpils Mark Rothko Art Center which signed a Letter of Intent on cooperation between both institutions in 2016 during the visit of a delegation from Daugavpils to Trondheim which aimed at exploring potential areas of cooperation between the institutions of both cities.
